Our History

Supt. Henry Page founded the St. Paul Church of God in Christ in May 1961. He started the work in a small two-bedroom house owned by his mother and father-in-law, Mr. Celles and Mrs. Alee Steel. Mother Steel later became the mother of the Church.

The Ministry began with the young Pastor's wife, Chrestell, and their six children, Henry, Jr., Cynthia, Peggy, Diana, Jacqueline & Teresa. There was one other member who started with them that day, Sister Marie Disnew. She is still a faithful member and mother of the church today.

From that humble beginning, St. Paul has been blessed to grow into one of the most dynamic and flourishing congregations in the city. They are known for enthusiastic, jubilee services where the Holy Ghost is allowed to have His way! As a matter of fact, the church has been nicknamed, Holy Ghost Headquarters! Their music ministry of praise and worship is a powerful moving force to be reckoned with. Pastor Page is a wonderful blend of Evangelist, Teacher and Pastor. He’s "Old School" but his Shepherd's Heart has allowed him to keep in touch with the new generation.

The St. Paul you see today was once three separate church buildings. Upon final completion, Supt. Page connected all three buildings to form one spacious complex, bringing sanctuary, offices and fellowship hall together under one roof. The work of his hands is commendable and is admired by many to this day.

Currently, the needs of the membership have outgrown this facility and Pastor Page is seeking the leading of the Lord regarding the next phase of expansion. The church has purchased a nice lot across from the sanctuary that is being used for parking. St. Paul sits on a corner that was once an abandoned eyesore and a disgrace to the community. Thanks to the vision of one man, it is now a beautiful landmark in the Southeast San Diego area.

First Lady Mary Page is a dynamic leader and speaker in her own right. She is frequently on the road responding to speaking engagements around the city, the nation and the world. She has spoken all over the United States and in Italy and Nigeria. Together they form a phenomenal team and work as a unit inspiring the support auxiliaries of the church to “minister” to the total needs of the people. Under their leadership, we look forward to greater things from Greater St. Paul! For a complete look at the ministries of Greater St. Paul, please visit our Ministries link on this website.
